Obama’s Martha’s Vineyard Estate on the Market for $39 Million

A stunning summer retreat once favored by Barack and Michelle Obama is now available for purchase at a price of $39 million.

Known as Blue Heron Farm, this expansive 30-acre property is located on Martha’s Vineyard, a picturesque island off Massachusetts. The estate is owned by renowned British architect Lord Foster of Thames Bank and his spouse, Elena Ochoa Foster.

Lord Foster, celebrated for his work on notable structures such as the Gherkin and Wembley Stadium in London, is currently involved in designing a new stadium for Manchester United.

The estate boasts a spacious main house measuring 7,000 square feet, along with a five-bedroom guesthouse, a boathouse, an equestrian riding ring, and both basketball and tennis courts. Additionally, the property features an apple orchard, a historic barn that dates back a century, a pool house, and direct access to private waterfront. The estate’s listing was initially reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Lord Foster acquired the estate in 2011 for $22.4 million and described its enchanting location as having, “a beautiful approach through a long avenue lined by trees leading to a classic New England house with historic farming roots.” He praised the estate for its sense of space, freedom, and privacy, while still being centrally positioned on the island.

The Obamas, who frequented the property during their summers, enjoyed a series of vacations there, reportedly paying $50,000 per week for their stays according to ABC News.

The family was frequently seen biking, indulging in ice cream, and exploring the local area. Barack Obama later purchased a separate home in the Turkeyland Cove area of Martha’s Vineyard.

In an interview with The New Yorker earlier this year, Lord Foster mentioned a brief encounter with Obama post-sale, where Obama humorously suggested that Foster should rent his nearby Turkeyland property.

Martha’s Vineyard has been a popular getaway for celebrities and the affluent for years, including figures like Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Swift, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. The average home price on the island stands at $1.5 million.

In a notable political event in 2022, Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, transported 50 undocumented immigrants via airplane as part of a political statement against “sanctuary jurisdictions” for migrants in Democratic states.

Stephen Miller, a former White House aide, suggested in a tweet that Obama’s estate could potentially accommodate several thousand undocumented migrants if temporary structures were erected.
